DERBYSHIRE AND THE PEAK PARK
DERBYSHIRE AND THE PEAK PARK
During 1995 - 96 a study was carried out into the grey slates of Derbyshire and the Peak District National Park. This was published in 1996 and copies are held in the local libraries and county archives.
One objective of the work was to consider how many different types of stone slates would be needed to be able to conserve the range of roofs in the region. Based on visual characteristics of colour, texture etc, the six types shown below were proposed and five named for the type locality.
A seventh type was added later, Magnesian limestone, which is very similar in appearance to Cotswold limestones
Yorkstone
Kerridge
Cracken Edge
Teggs Nose
Freebirch
Wirksworth
Another objective was to create a visual record of the stone slates. Some of those image locations are shown by red dots in the map.
