Refixing broken, slipped or lost slates
For top hung slates and stone-slates (sandstone or limestones), it is usually fairly easy push adjacent slates to one side and hang a replacement slate.

For center nailed slates it is more difficult. Broken slates need to be stripped out using a slate ripper. The new slate cannot be nailed because the adjacent slates are in the way so it has to be hung in some way. Lead tingles are commonly used but they are unsightly and can gradually unroll. Copper tingles don't unroll but they still spoil the look of the roof. There are hidden fixings on the market but many of them are less than successful. One with a good track record for use on all but the steepest roofs is the Jenny Twin.
