To accommodate the larger number of small slates in the upper parts
of a random roof it is necessary to introduce backers: narrow slates
set 'centrally' over wide slates. If a minimum sidelap has been defined
then the width of the backer must be at least twice the minimum side
lap and the wide slate at least four times.
