Figure 183
Fissile bed of Collyweston Slate exposed in an aggregate quarry. Where
beds of fissile rock were thin they was mined to avoid having to remove
large amounts of valueless overburden. The most well known examples were
at Stonesfield, Collyweston and Elland Edge but there are many other examples
especially in the Pennines.
