The use of mortar needs to be very carefully controlled. Here, on
Pitchford Church, the head bedding has formed a complete layer under
the slates. Because the mortar was level with the bottom edge of
the slates the roof was permanently wet and eventually failed, the
battens rotting and the slating collapsing onto the ceiling at the
rafter line.
