The most frequent form of quarry is close to the surface, exposed
at a scarp slope and where the slate beds run parallel with the land
surface so that there is little overburden to be removed. If the
beds dip into the ground the delve would be worked along the strike,
that is, perpendicular to the dip as at Cracken Edge see figures
173 and 188.
